Create your index
This guide walks you through the index4.ai console — the website where you manage your documents. You don't need to write any code.
The idea in one minute
- Your account is your login.
- A project is one index: a collection of documents that belong together, for example "Company handbook" or "Customer contracts". When you search, you search inside one project.
- Documents are the files you upload into a project: PDFs, Word files, web pages.
Most people start with a single project. Create more when you want to keep topics, teams or customers strictly apart.
1. Sign up
Open the sign-up page and create your free account. No credit card is needed.
2. Create a project
In the console, create a new project and give it a name that tells you what's inside, for example Company handbook.
Working in a team?
You can also create an organisation first and create the project inside it. Then your colleagues can use the same project.
3. Upload your documents
Open your project and upload your files — drag them into the upload area, or paste a link to a document on the web.
Each document is processed once: index4.ai reads it, works out its structure (headings, sections, tables) and makes it searchable. Small files are ready within seconds; long documents can take a few minutes. You can keep working while that happens.
4. Ask your first question
Use the search in the console to try it: type a question in plain words, for example "What is our travel expense limit?". You get back the passages from your documents that answer it, and which document they came from.
5. Use it from your AI assistant
Searching in the console is the quickest check. Day to day, most people ask their AI assistant instead: connect index4.ai to Claude or another assistant, and it can look things up in your project whenever you ask.
Good to know
- Deleting a document removes it from your index; once that is done, new searches no longer find it.
- Updating a document: upload the new version, then delete the old one so answers only use the current text.
- Your plan decides how many pages you can upload and how many questions you can ask — see pricing.
For developers
Everything in the console is also available over the API — see Create a project and the quickstart.
